Woofle - The visual design of interactive web-based dialogues |
|
Woofle is a generator of web-based dialogues. On one side of the dialogue is a person (the respondent). On the other side is a dialogue script written in Woofle.
The script:
- Presents information in HTML, i.e. media and image-enhanced text.
- Asks the respondent a starting question and offers possible answers.
- Receives and evaluates the respondent’s chosen answer, and
- Selects the appropriate information to present next, and
- Selects the appropriate question to ask next.
- Keeps track of a respondent’s progress throughout a dialogue, using simple techniques like counting, or complex mathematical formulae.
- Provides relevant outputs to the respondent based on this progress.
The result is dialogue highly responsive to the answers of the respondent.
Woofle dialogues can:
- Present a simple self-assessment quiz
- Conduct an on-line survey with questions shaped by previous answers
- Do a complex quotation taking into account many different variables
- Offer a financial calculator for loans or investments
- Conduct powerful, interactive case studies on a wide range of subjects
- Create front-end wizards, interview respondents and save their replies
- Do things that the author of Woofle hasn’t thought of yet!
Later versions of Woofle will allow for text to be spoken aloud. With the help of third-party software, Woofle will allow visible avatars playing different roles to interact with a respondent – especially useful for realistic case studies. Movie (.swf) files will also be able to be played as part of information presented under the direction of a Woofle script. |
